Dramatic Irony
A Double Murder In Verona
This is Hannah Blanshan and Marissa Garceau reporting from Verona, Italy. Much grief and havoc has just occurred due to the deaths of Juliet Capulet, Romeo Montague, and Paris. This dramatic incident has caused many citizens to mourn over their deaths.
Some say it all began the night before Romeo and Juliet’s death. When Lord Capulet told Juliet that she would be married to Paris the next morning; not the next Thursday, which was when they were originally supposed to get married. Lord Capulet thought Juliet and Paris’ wedding date should be moved up to end Juliet’s mourning over Tybalt. Juliet was appalled and very devastated about this news. She had no choice to marry Paris, and no one was there to defend her or to be on her side. Juliet was left in the dark, and her father threatened to disown and shun her if she didn't marry Paris. citation: Friar Lawrence. Digital image. The Circular. N.p., n.d. After this horrible news, some say that Juliet went to visit Friar Lawrence for confession. As she arrived to confess to Friar Lawrence, she ran into none other than Paris. Paris was still in the friar’s cell after he had confessed to him. When Juliet had entered Friar Lawrence’s cell, Paris confronted her and gave her a kiss. As soon as Paris left, Juliet freaked out and threatened to kill herself with a knife. Juliet said that she would rather die than marry Paris. The friar then proposed a plan: Juliet must keep her word and marry Paris; then, on the night before they wed, she must drink a sleeping potion that will make her appear dead; Juliet will then be found “dead” and be laid to rest in the Capulet tomb, and the friar will send word for Romeo in Mantua to help him retrieve her when she would wake up.
Then when Friar Lawrence sent Friar John to Mantua, he couldn't get word to Romeo because the towns people thought the friar was infected with a plague, so Romeo does not know about the plan between Friar Lawrence and Juliet. Some people say that Balthazar went to tell Romeo about Juliet’s “death”. When Balthazar told Romeo, he reacted crazily after he heard this very bad news. Romeo decided to drink poison to be with Juliet forever. It’s ironic that Romeo will kill himself because he thought that Juliet was dead, when people now say that she really wasn't at the time. Everyone in Verona will always remember the story of these two star-crossed lovers terrifying deaths. |
